Clean-Energy.us Summary

Statement of Eastman CEO Brian Ferguson at House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on "Future Coal Options." Using Eastman's 20+ years of coal gasification experience and drawing upon other data assembled by Eastman Gasification Services Company, Ferguson reaches three conclusions: (1) coal gasification "can be competitive right now and is becoming more cost-effective with each passing day;" (2) coal gasification powerplants can be operated reliably -- (Eastman's gasification system has achieved on-stream availability of 98 percent since 1984); and (3) gasification offers significant environmental benefits ("significantly lower air pollution emissions in the short-term and more cost-efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and sequestration in the long-term."
