Overview

This library is designed to help guide high school and college-level students who seek to learn more about coal gasification and the generation of electricity in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) powerplants. These are very exciting subjects and we are pleased to assist you in your research.

Preparing a Research Report on Gasification

There is a treasure-trove of information about gasification and IGCC power production available through the Internet. However, as you may have already discovered, this information is buried within dozens of different Web sites. Clean-energy.us was created to help bring a little order to this chaos. Here's some of what we've discovered along the way:
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of good survey works (either for technical or general audiences). If you want a broad introduction to gasification and IGCC technologies, we recommend:
Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Technology - Its Actual Application in Spain, Manuel Coca (Elcogas), 2003 (96 pages).  Summary   Full Text (.pdf 1.0 Mb)
Fortunately, there is a comprehensive report on the environmental benefits of IGCC technology, prepared by SAIC under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory:
Major Environmental Aspects of Gasification-Based Power Generation Technologies, Jay Ratafia-Brown, Lynn Manfredo, Jeff Hoffman, and Massood Ramezan (all Science Applications International Corp.) December 2002, (270 pages).  Summary   Full Text (.pdf 9.4Mb)
Three important studies released in 2004 discuss the market barriers to widespread deployment of IGCC in the United States:
Coal-Based Integrated Coal Gasification Combined Cycle: Market Penetration Recommendations and Strategies, Richard Aiken, Kenneth Ditzel, Frank Morra, and David Wilson (all Booz Allen Hamilton), September 2004, (100 pages).  Summary   Full Text (.pdf 4.8Mb)
Deploying IGCC in this Decade with 3Party Covenant Financing, William Rosenberg, Dwight Alpern, and Michael Walker (Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University), (106 pages). August 2004.  Summary   Full Text (.pdf 768k)
An Analysis of the Institutional Challenges to Commercialization and Deployment of IGCC technology in the U.S. Electric Industry, John O'Brien and Joel Blau (Global-Change Associates), March 2004 (112 pages).  Summary   Full text (.pdf 602k)
The gasification industry is represented by a nonprofit trade association -- the Gasification Technologies Council -- located in the Washington, D.C. area { www.gasification.org }. GTC and EPRI jointly sponsor the industry's premier annual conference and the GTC maintains a library of technical papers and PowerPoint presentations. The most recent documents in this library are available to the public through the GTC Web site. The following documents are highly recommended:
Industry In Transition - 2004 World Gasification Survey, James Childress (Gasification Technologies Council), 2004 Gasification Technology Conference, October 3, 2004 (15 pages).  Summary   PowerPoint
Coal-Based IGCC Plants - Recent Operations and Lessons Learned, Neville Holt (EPRI), 2004 Gasification Technology Conference, October 3, 2004
(13 pages).   Summary    PowerPoint   Technical Paper
Resources Available on this Web Site
As stated above, clean-energy.us aims to be a definitive source of news and information about coal gasification. Students are urged to explore all of this site's nooks and crannies. Here is some of what you will find:
News & Opinion. We regularly search the Internet for news stories about coal gasification, clean coal technologies, and other subjects. We report on industry and government developments worldwide and provide news about coal-based IGCC projects under active development.  Hyperlink
Information Database. We have examined and indexed hundreds of gasification-related documents. These documents run the gamut from technical papers presented at recent coal, gasification, and electric power conferences to documents obtained through regular, exhaustive Internet searches.  Hyperlink
Facts. We believe that coal gasification is best understood when viewed from a broad energy context. Therefore, we have included within this Web site some basic facts about: coal, natural gas, electricity, gasification, and IGCC power. (Facts about the environment are forthcoming.)  Hyperlink
Success Stories. We have written several case studies that provide basic information about coal gasification and IGCC projects in current operation here in the United States and around the world.  Hyperlink
Sources. We have organized our sources of information in a manner that makes it easy to pursue additional research. We routinely check these links, but since the Internet is an ever-evolving space we provide no guarantees!  Hyperlink
