World's largest gasification facility produces more
than 550 MWe of electricity at a refinery in Sardinia.
Sarlux, the world's largest IGCC power plant, was
completed in 2000 by a consortium including Snamprogetti SpA
(Milan) and GE Power Systems. This facility began producing
electricity from syngas in September 2000. The project is
located on the Italian island of Sardinia at the Saras Oil
Refinery in Sarroch (the second largest European refinery). The
plant gasifies 1.1 million metric tons per year of the tar-like
residue produced by vacuum visbreaking at the refinery. It
produces: 551MWe (net) of electricity; 285 metric tons of
process steam for the refinery; and 20 million standard cubic
feet a day of hydrogen. The electricity is sold to ENEL, Italy's
state-controlled electric company.
